It's our annual "Pick the Oscar Nominations." Before the Academy will announce its Oscar choices, this is our chance to pick who should be nominated, and who probably will be. 2022 was the supposed "back to normal" Oscars season. How will that be reflected in the nominations?

The Cinema Lounge, a film discussion group, meets the third Monday of every month (unless otherwise noted) at 7:00pm at Teaism in Penn Quarter, 400 8th St., NW in Washington, DC (closest Metro stop is Archives, also near Metro Center and Gallery Place). NOTE: We will meet in the downstairs area. WE ARE MEETING ONLINE THIS MONTH. You do not need to be a member of the Washington DC Film Society to attend. Cinema Lounge is moderated by Adam Spector, author of the DC Film Society's Adam's Rib column.

We are always looking for film-related material for the Storyboard. Our enthusiastic and well-traveled members have written about their trips to the Cannes Film Festival, Karlovy Vary Film Festival, London Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival, the Berlin Film Festival, the Palm Springs Film Festival, the Reykjavik Film Festival, the Munich Film Festival, and the Locarno Film Festival. We also heard about what it's like being an extra in the movies. Have you gone to an interesting film festival? Have a favorite place to see movies that we aren't covering in the Calendar of Events? Seen a movie that blew you away? Read a film-related book? Gone to a film seminar? Interviewed a director? Taken notes at a Q&A? Read an article about something that didn't make our local news media? American Film Institute Silver Theater
The AFI does mostly first-run films in January but lots of new film series are in the works. Beginning January 28, is a series of films from Iran.
Freer Gallery of Art
On January 11 at 2:00pm is Three Outlaw Samurai (Hideo Gosha, 1964), part of the "Japanese Classics" series.
A series of films from Iran begins in January. On January 20 at 7:00pm is The Apple Day (Mahmoud Ghaffari, 2022); on January 22 at 2:00pm is the documentary Destiny (Yaser Talebi, 2022); and on January 29 at 2:00pm is Chess of the Wind (Mohamed Reza Aslani, 1976). More in February.
National Gallery of Art
The "Fellini Retrospective" continues in January. On January 14 at 2:00pm is Casanova (Federico Fellini, 1976); on January 21 at 2:00pm is 8-1/2 (Federico Fellini, 1963); on January 22 at 2:00pm is Roma (Federico Fellini, 1972) preceded by Toby Dammit (1968) part of the omnibus film Spirits of the Dead. On January 28 at 2:00pm is Intervista (Federico Fellini, 1987).
Special Events: On January 7 at 1:00pm is Cane Fire (Anthony Banua-Simon, 2021), a non-romantic look at Hawaii, followed by Rock Bottom Riser (Fern Silva, 2021), about Mauna Kea. Both Anthony Banua-Simon and Fern Silva will be present to introduce their films.
Registration is required for all films.
National Museum of African American History and Culture
On January 7 at 2:00pm is Descendant (Margaret Brown, 2022), a documentary about the search and discovery of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to arrive in the U.S. The film's director, co-writer, and others will take part in a discussion after the film.
Washington Jewish Community Center
On January 9 at 7:30pm is When You Finish Saving the World (Jesse Eisenberg, 2022), starring Julianne Moore. On January 26 at 1:00pm is Space Torah (Rob Cooper), a short documentary about NASA astronaut Jeff Hoffman who read from the Torah while orbiting the earth. The filmmaker and a NASA expert will take part in Q&A after the film.
National Geographic Society
The 2023 Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour has a slate of awarding-winning films showing January 30-February 4. Three separate programs are shown twice each at 7:00pm
French Embassy
On January 6 at 7:00pm is C'est la vie (Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, 2017); on January 17 at 7:00pm is Queen to Play (Caroline Bottaro, 2009); on January 31 at 7:00pm is The Intouchables (Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, 2011). More in February.
Bethesda Row
"Cinema Arts Bethesda" is a monthly Sunday morning film discussion series. On January 8 at 10:00am is Blue Caftan (Maryam Touzani, 2022), Morocco's Oscar pick.
Breakfast is at 9:30am, the film is at 10:00am and discussion follows, moderated by Adam Spector, host of the DC Film Society's Cinema Lounge and author of the column "Adam's Rib." A season pass is available.
The Avalon
On January 11 at 8:00pm is Buko (Alice Nellis, 2022), part of the "Czech Lions" series.
On January 18 at 8:00pm is The Super 8 Years (Annie Ernaux, 2022) for this month's "French Cinematheque."
Landmark's E Street Cinema
"Retro Replay" is a series of classic films shown Tuesdays at 4:00pm and 7:30pm (note that the times may vary). This month's theme is "Kubrick Essentials." On January 3 is a 4K Digital Remaster of Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964); on January 10 is 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), also a 4K Digital Remaster shown at 3:30pm and 7:30pm; on January 17 is A Clockwork Orange (1971) shown at 4:00pm and 7:15pm in 4K; on January 24 is Barry Lyndon (1975) at 3:15pm and 7:30pm; and on January 31 is Full Metal Jacket (1987) in 4K.
Kennedy Center
On January 8 at 3:00pm is the documentary Sidney (Reginald Hudlin, 2022), about Sidney Poitier. On January 15 at 3:00pm is In the Heat of the Night (Norman Jewison, 1967); on January 22 at 3:00pm is Hidden Figures (Theodore Melfi, 2016); on January 29 at 3:00pm is The Farewell (Lulu Wang, 2019).
